Carol Cooper in The Village Voice notes that the female hero's "style of magic is Nomadic Shaman, not Medieval Mage,"[5] but the book is relevant here primarily because Who Fears Death, as Mark Bould observes, "is set in a post-apocalyptic future in which technology and magic operate side by side" (SFRA Review #311 [Winter 2015]: 17),[6] made more interesting in that the tradition of magic closer to that of the Igbo of Africa than to that of the peoples of Europe.
