Burnham, James. The Managerial Revolution: What Is Happening in the World. New York: The John Day Company, 1941.

Mostly written in 1940, with some last-minute notes added in 1941, so "What Is Happening" includes the Great Depression (which JB saw continuing), the betrayal of socialist ideals in Russia, the Hitler-Stalin pact, and the start of World War II. Important for G. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (q.v. under Fiction): for the division of the world into three competing superstates and (relevant here) the analysis of oligarchical collectivism with "managers" as the new ruling class.

See under Background Michael Lind's The New Class War, an updating of Burnham's analysis to 2017 and the Age of Donald Trump (et al.).
