Le Guin, Ursula K. The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia. New York: Harper & Row, 1974.[1]

An important work, most relevant here for showing how development of a highly abstract theory in a combination of math, physics, and philosophy, with political implications, can make possible the development of a highly practical device (also with implications, emphatically including the political): the ansible, which allows transfer of information instantaneously, avoiding the limit of the speed of light.
