Rose, Mark. "Machine." Ch. 6 of Alien Encounters: An Anatomy of Science Fiction. Cambridge, MA: Harvard UP, 1981.

Discusses Zamiatin's We and other dystopias, concentrating on "the metaphor of society as a kind of machine that has reduced the individual to the status of a robot." See esp. 166-75. In film criticism, includes an excellent discussion of "the opposition between man and machine" in the "narrative foreground" of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and of the resolution of that opposition in the conclusion of the film (see 142-52).
