Strugatsky, Boris, and Arkady Strugatsky. Escape Attempt (Russian: Попытка к бегству, romanized: Popytka k begstvu) 1962. Roger DeGaris, translator. New York: Macmillan Publishers, 1962.[1]

Part of the Noon Universe series: see also Noon: 22nd Century and Far Rainbow.

John J. Pierce notes a planetary setting that "turns out to be a cross between a feudal autarchy and a fascist police state, with one novelty of its own: there is a moving road, filled with vehicles left by the Wanderers, and political prisoners are forced to risk their lives by probing controls at random to try to find out how they work" (Revision of Foundations of Science Fiction in ms. on Soviet SF, p. 21).[2] Cf. and contrast testing Heechee spacecraft, etc., in Fred Pohl's Gateway series.
