Crystal Rain

Buckell, Tobias S. Crystal Rain. New York: Tor, 2006.

From Wikipedia "stub" on the novel: "Crystal Rain (2006) is the debut novel of Caribbean writer Tobias S. Buckell. Buckell calls it his "Caribbean steampunk novel". Although Crystal Rain is a stand-alone novel, Buckell's books Ragamuffin (2007) and Sly Mongoose (2008) are set in the same universe with some recurring characters."[1]

On the site SF Reviews.net, Thomas M. Wagner (apparently) refers to Crystal Rain as "action-adventure saga set on a 'lost colony' world, in which the descendants of humans and aliens fight over a fragile steampunk civilization" — so see for steampunk in implicit contrast with lower-tech culture of "human descendents of colonists who lost most of their technology generations ago."[2]
