The environment of the spaceship in this story "becomes an integral part of the mind of its inhabitant" (Wolfe 78). The protagonist of the story sees that environment as "perfectly rigid, still, unchanging, lifeless" (Blish, in Galactic Cluster 56; quoted by Wolfe 78)[[1]]
