Christopher, John. The White Mountains. New York: Macmillan, 1967. The City of Gold and Lead. New York: Macmillan, 1967. The Pool of Fire. New York: Macmillan, 1968. New York: Collier, 1970. Originally published in London by Hamish Hamilton in 1967 and 1968.

Classic alien invasion trilogy for junior high school readers. Chronicles the adventures of three boys as they escape "capping" (the implantation of an electronic device in the scalp). The caps perpetuate the control of aliens known as "Tripods" because of the giant, three-legged machines in which they travel. Cf. K. Kesey's Cuckoo's Nest, K. Vonnegut's Sirens of Titan (under Fiction), and INVADERS FROM MARS (cited under Drama); note also H. G. Well's War of the Worlds (1898), for tripods.
