Schamberg's machine paintings and pastels are not nearly so abstract as once believed, being based on parts of specific machines. These works evolved more independently of Marcel Duchamp's and Francis Picabia's machine imagery than previously supposed. Although they speak to a pervasive attraction to the machine during the period, they lack the irony of the Dada stance.
